From Structural Design Intent to Fabrication-Ready Documentation

Fabricators and structural engineering firms regularly need detailing capacity that flexes with workload — a tender that needs shop drawings fast, an engineer's design that needs to become fabrication-ready documentation, or a project that has outgrown the in-house drafting team's bandwidth.

Structural detailing sits in an unusual position: it has to be precise enough to satisfy an engineer's design intent, but practical enough that a fabrication shop can actually build from it without constant clarification calls back to the office. Getting that balance wrong in either direction — too theoretical or too loose — creates real cost, whether that's rework on the shop floor or a connection that technically satisfies the drawing but not the engineer's actual intent.

Structural Documentation Built for Fabrication and Erection

Our structural drafting service takes structural engineering design and produces the documentation a fabricator or builder works from — general arrangement drawings, connection details, and fully detailed shop and erection drawings for structural steel and, where scoped, concrete detailing.

Constructability

Technically Correct Is Not Enough. It Has to Be Buildable.

We work from the structural engineer's design (drawings, model or calculations) and produce detailing that reflects real fabrication and erection practice — member sizes, connection types, bolt patterns and welds that a workshop can price and build from without rework. A drawing that is technically accurate but impractical to fabricate is not actually a useful drawing, and we treat constructability as part of the detailing brief, not an afterthought.

Detailing follows the structural engineer's design intent and any specified connection design. Connection design itself is an engineering function — where required we work alongside your structural engineer rather than replacing that sign-off, since connection capacity is a structural engineering decision, not a drafting one.

Connection Detailing Where Design Meets Fabrication

Connection detailing deserves particular care because it's where the majority of fabrication queries originate. We detail connections to reflect the specified capacity and construction category from the engineer's design, and flag anywhere the practical fabrication approach might differ from a purely theoretical connection so it can be confirmed before steel is cut.

Structural BIM Coordination Before Fabrication

Where a project is being run in Revit or Tekla, we can produce or work within a structural BIM model, keeping detailing coordinated with architectural and services models and supporting clash detection before fabrication. This coordination step is where a lot of expensive on-site rework gets prevented — a beam that clashes with a duct is far cheaper to fix on screen than after the steel has been delivered to site.

Quantities That Follow the Detailed Model

Material take-offs and bolt lists are produced directly from the detailed model or drawing set, not as a separate manual exercise, which keeps quantities consistent with what's actually shown on the drawings — a common and costly failure point when take-offs are done independently of the detailing itself.

Every Structural Revision Should Be Traceable

For projects that move through multiple revisions as the design develops, we maintain a clear audit trail of what changed between issues, which matters enormously on structural work where a missed connection change can mean re-fabricating a piece that's already been cut and welded.

Drawings Designed to Be Read Under Pressure

Structural drafting quality is also about anticipating where the drawing set will actually be read under pressure — a fabricator pricing a tender against a tight deadline, or a foreman on site during erection trying to resolve a query without stopping the crew. Drawings that are clear enough to be read quickly under those conditions, not just technically correct in isolation, are what actually keep a project moving.

Project lifecycle

A Drawing Set Changes With the Project

We also pay attention to how a drawing set ages over the life of a project. A structural package issued for tender, then revised through design development, then reissued for construction, needs each stage's issue clearly distinguishable from the last — not just by a revision letter, but by a clear understanding of what actually changed and why, so nobody downstream has to reverse-engineer the difference between two drawing issues by comparing them line by line.

FAQs

Structural Drafting FAQs

Structural drafting is the production of technical drawings that translate a structural engineer's design into documentation a fabricator or builder can price, fabricate and erect from — including shop drawings, connection details and general arrangements.

Detailing follows the structural engineer's design intent and any specified connection design. Connection design itself is an engineering function — where required we work alongside your structural engineer rather than replacing that sign-off, since connection capacity is a structural engineering decision, not a drafting one.

Yes — see our BIM services for structural modelling, coordination and clash detection in Tekla and Revit.

Yes, PDF or scanned structural drawings can be converted into working CAD or BIM files — see our CAD conversion service.

Commercial and industrial construction, mining and resources, manufacturing facilities and general structural steel fabrication are the most common, though the detailing approach is broadly similar across sectors — the main difference is usually the governing load case and site access constraints.

Revisions are tracked against the previous issue with a clear changelog, so the fabrication shop can see exactly what changed rather than having to compare entire drawing sets sheet by sheet.

Yes, take-offs and bolt lists are generated from the same detailed model or drawing set rather than compiled separately, which keeps quantities consistent with what's actually shown.

Yes, detailing reinforcement or modifications to an existing structure is a common project type, usually starting with a review of existing drawings or as-built conditions before new detailing begins.

Yes, tender-stage detailing is one of the most time-sensitive parts of this service, and turnaround is confirmed against your actual bid deadline as part of the quote rather than left open-ended.

By keeping connection details unambiguous, piece marking consistent, and cross-references between sheets easy to follow — a drawing set is only as useful as how quickly someone can find the answer they need during a live erection query.

Yes, concrete detailing is available where scoped as part of a project, alongside our primary structural steel detailing capability.

Yes, a GA drawing set can be scoped on its own where a project needs an overall structural layout without full shop-level detailing, for example at an early tender or coordination stage.

Detailing follows whatever load case and category the structural engineer's design specifies — our role is to translate that specified capacity into buildable connection and member detail, not to determine the governing load case itself.

We can begin detailing on stable, confirmed portions of a design while flagging which areas are still subject to change, so the project doesn't lose time waiting for every last design decision to be locked in before detailing starts.

Yes, structural models can be built to whatever LOD the project stage actually needs, from early coordination-level detail through to full fabrication-level LOD 400 where required.

Yes, detailing new or supplementary structural elements added to strengthen an existing structure is a common brownfield project type, usually starting with a review of the existing structure's current condition.

We check that detailed connections reflect the specified capacity and construction category from the engineer's design, flagging anything that appears inconsistent for the engineer to confirm rather than resolving it ourselves.

Yes, detailing for pre-engineered building systems is available, following the specific manufacturer's connection and member conventions where the project is built around a proprietary system.

Yes, where a specific approval authority has its own formatting or submission conventions, we draft to match them, since resubmission due to a formatting mismatch is an avoidable delay.

Yes, detailing a new mezzanine or platform structure coordinated against an existing building's structure is a common project type, usually requiring a site or as-built verification step first.

Yes, we make sure revision history and design-intent notes are clear enough that a new contractor picking up the drawing set mid-project can understand its current status without needing the original team on hand to explain it.

Yes, detailing with future dismantling in mind — bolted rather than welded connections where practical, clear piece marking for reassembly — is a specific and achievable brief where relocatable structures are part of the project's intent.

Yes, where a fabricated structure is being exported or built to an overseas specification requiring imperial units, we can produce a drawing set carrying both unit systems clearly.

Yes, platform and support steel detailing that reflects specific equipment loading, informed by the mechanical engineer's equipment data, is a common request for process and industrial facilities.
